University of Washington Junior Wins Pac-10 Title

1268375

Some good news from the college golf circuit: Darren Wallace, a junior at the University of Washington, walked away with the Pac-10 title yesterday with an 11-under 277.

A perfect putt on the 9th hole gave him an eagle and a 9-shot lead that, despite double bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes, kept him 4 shots ahead of Huskies teammate Nick Taylor.

Washington, who before the Pac-10 championships at Seattle Golf Club had never won a tournament with the team, said, “I was definitely excited to get on the course today. I was definitely feeling a little bit nervous, and it took me a little while to get to sleep last night. But it was more excitement than anything. It was a pretty comfortable lead, and to be able to come out of the gates and extend that lead was key.”

As tournament champion, Washington, who’s ranked No. 5 in the nation, gets automatic berth in the NCAA regionals,  which will take place from May 14 to 16.

The DealTeam is rootin’ for ya, Darren. Go get ‘em, kiddo!

Ochoa Gaining Steam

Let’s hear it for the ladies!

Defending champ Lorena Ochoa won the Corona Championship with score of 25 strokes under par, holding off Norway’s Suzann Pettersen by a stroke in a dramatic final round. 27-year-old Ochoa, who has won the Morelia, Mexico-based event three times since 2006, had back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to break a tie with Pettersen.

Next up for Ochoa is the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill Resort, from May 7 to 10.

Good vibes go out to Ochoa and all her female opponents – may the best lady golfer win!

Do You Know Moe?

We came across this great video memorial on golf legend Moe Norman, who, in our opinion, was completely underrated. Norman played briefly in the PGA Tour – in 1959 – but due to his reclusive personality he returned to his native Canada to play out the rest of his legendary career – and it was there that he became the greatest ball striker the world has never known. We could go on for hours about the late, great Moe Norman, but the video above tells his story better than we can. Have a look.

Tiger to Skip Quail Hollow?

quail

There’s only a few days left for Tiger Woods to commit to the Quail Hollow Championship, the Charlotte PGA Tour event running from April 30 to May 3.

But, if history is to repeat itself, the golf great will likely wait until the last minute to make his decision.

(Always the grandstander, that guy – we don’t know how his wife puts up with it. We kid, of course – but come on, guy; we’re holding our breath here!)

Because of his surgery, Tiger wasn’t able to compete last year, but if you recall, he hit the Hollow links in 2007 and emerged victorious.

He has even stiffer competition this time around though, seeing as how Phil Mickelson, Trevor Immelman and seven other top-ranked golfers, including Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington and Vijay Singh, have already thrown their hats into the ring.

You hear that, Tiger? These guys are lined up for a shot at the spotlight. You’re not gonna let them take you down without a fight, right?

T-minus 2 days and counting…
